Going into 2023 there is a lot of overhaul along Alabama’s offense including a new play caller, restructuring the offensive line, new faces in the tight end room and developing receivers there isn’t quite anything that’s as compelling as the competition at quarterback.
Although Nick Saban has shared that both Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson are continuing to make progress, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum isn’t as enthusiastic about what he’s heard about the battle.
“I’m not crazy about what I’m hearing from Nick Saban or anyone else about the quarterback play,” Finebaum said on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” on Monday.
In the Crimson Tide’s previous scrimmage, Saban noted that there were some good plays from both but also “some plays they probably wish they would have back” which leads Finebaum to believe that Alabama could possibly be looking for a quarterback from the transfer portal.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if the busiest man in the portal right now is Nick Saban looking for a quarterback,” Finebaum said.
The spring transfer season began at the end of last week and Alabama has already seen a pair of players decide to pursue their football journeys elsewhere. Although more players across the country will be testing the transfer waters, it still doesn’t guarantee that the Crimson Tide would get an upgrade at the quarterback position.
“It would take something extraordinary,” Finebaum said. “It shows the situation of what Saban missed in the last portal. That was the moment that he needed to take advantage of. Right now, you could get a bizarre entry. But more than likely you’re not going to.
“A week from today, I’m really interested in what fans think, what experts think, and really whether we continue thinking that this Alabama team is in the national championship race, or depending on the portal, do we recalibrate that?”
