We have seen elite players start in Alabama’s defensive secondary as freshmen, and a new face is ready to emerge.

Caleb Downs, a five-star from Georgia, was a human highlight reel at Mill Creek High School.

He played offense and defense on the gridiron, but Downs also specialized in basketball and baseball. His impressive skill set as a tackler, instinctive ball hawk, and high football intelligence pushed Mill Creek to be a strong program. The 6-foot, 203-pounder enrolled early for the Crimson Tide and has turned heads in spring practice. Nick Saban highlighted Downs as a freshman that’s been getting more reps after the second scrimmage. His continued growth has the seven-time national champion raving more about his development. On Wednesday, Saban told reporters Downs has ‘lots of maturity’ for a young player.

“He’s done great,” he said about Downs.

“He is smart, understands football, really conscientious about making sure he knows what to do on the field and doing it. He has had a good spring and has added a lot to the secondary with the way he’s played. He is a good player.”

A player is normally in a position to be a starter when Coach Saban speaks highly of them.

Downs has come in and done everything required of him. He has quickly picked up the system and looks to be an impactful freshman in one of two safety positions. It is going to be exciting to watch him Saturday in Alabama’s spring game.
