Alabama fans are excited to see watch Bryce Young become the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, but Thursday’s news from social media has them more focused on the Crimson Tide’s football program.

Tyler Buchner, who left Notre Dame for the NCAA transfer portal, committed to Alabama.

As a California native, he played three games in 2022 for the Fighting Irish. He led the Irish to a thrilling, 45-38 victory in the Taxslayer Gator Bowl against South Carolina. Buchner had three interceptions, but he responded with five touchdowns.

He has 13 games of experience, but how does the former four-star affect Alabama’s team dynamic? Nick Saban is about fostering competition; however, does Buchner causes the Tide to lose someone to the portal? It is the most significant question as one has to think at least one signal-caller for the Tide is considering the portal. After that, the dynamic may not be affected much.

Buchner does have potential, but Alabama is looking to be more balanced offensively.

It has the offensive line it needs, the running back room is strong, and the tight ends looked great in the spring game. The Tide needs more consistency from its wide receivers, but the talent is there. Buchner would benefit from a conversation with Jacob Coker. Blake Sims had a bad spring game in 2014, and people expected Coker to come in from Florida State and take the starting job.  Coker, a native of Mobile, Ala., had to learn the room and vibe of Alabama. He found out that Sims had the heart of the team that season, but Coker supported Sims and waited for his opportunity. It came in 2015 when Coker was ready to lead the Crimson Tide to a national championship.

Buchner would cause someone to lead as it will be difficult to keep five quarterbacks on the roster. If comes in and earns the respect, he may be okay. It was an eerie move from Saban, but he has always been one to think outside the box.

We will see how it plays out with Buchner in the room.
