The staff at Touchdown Alabama Magazine will spotlight numerous players for the upcoming season.

Ty Simpson, a redshirt freshman, is second at quarterback.

Ty Simpson

Classification: Redshirt Freshman

Hometown: Martin, Tenn.

Position: Quarterback

Size: 6-2/203 pounds

2022 stats: 35 passing yards (4/5 passes completed)

Strengths: Size, athleticism, strong arm talent, knowledge of the system

Weaknesses: Needs more game experience

Summary

Ty Simpson graduated from Westview High School as a former Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Tennessee.

He took Westview to a Class 2A State Championship and totaled 41 touchdowns to three interceptions in his senior year.

Simpson came to the Crimson Tide as a five-star in the 2022 class. He played in four games last season — keeping his redshirt — posting 35 passing on four of five completed passes. The 6-foot-2, 203-pounder is competing against Jalen Milroe and Tyler Buchner (transfer) to be Alabama’s starting quarterback. Simpson is more of a natural passer than Milroe and it showed during spring practices. He had several beautiful passes in the A-Day game; however, receivers did not finish plays with a catch.

Simpson is the son of a college coach, so he understands the game well. He is also athletic, showing off his legs in the spring game.

He is not Bryce Young, but Simpson could give you some of the elements Young provided. He is missing game experience, but Simpson will grow in confidence once he gets on the field more. He could become a mixture of AJ McCarron and Jacob Coker, especially if he can command the team like them. We will see how he goes about preseason camp for the Crimson Tide.
