Despite being one of Alabama’s leading receivers entering the game, wide receiver Jermaine Burton’s playing time shrank significantly during the Crimson Tide’s 40-17 win over Mississippi State.
Burton played just nine snaps on the night and did not record a catch.
There was no indication of a suspension or injury leading up to the game further raising the question as to why he did not see more time.
According to a report from the Tuscaloosa News, Alabama’s offense was simply looking to get other receivers some playing time against the Bulldogs. The Crimson Tide played a total of eight receivers on the night which included Burton, Ja’Corey Brooks, Isaiah Bond, Kendrick Law, Jalen Hale, Kobe Prentice, Malik Benson and Shazz Preston.
Although the intention was to get other receivers more work, Alabama had a clear commitment to the run game against Mississippi State rushing the ball 43 times for 193 yards and three touchdowns compared to just 13 total pass attempts for 164 yards on the night.
As quarterback Jalen Milroe continues to be brought along in the offense, Burton and the passing game will be expected to make an impact in the weeks to come.
