As Alabama went through warmups ahead of the Mississippi State game, one young defender appeared to be working with a new position group.
Instead of working at his normal spot with the outside linebackers, Jeremiah Alexander had shifted to the inside backer spot.
Alabama had been preparing to play without starting linebacker Deontae Lawson who was replaced by Jihaad Campbell during the contest.
But on Monday following the 40-17 victory over the Bulldogs, Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban explained why the team switched Alexander inside.
“I think it’s something we’ve been considering,” Saban said. “Jeremiah was developing nicely as an outside ‘backer, wasn’t getting to play much. So the injury kind of enhanced this is the right time to do this. I think it could be good for us in the future.”
Alexander arrived in 2022 where he appeared in four games during his freshman season, primarily on special teams, before redshirting. He has continued his role on special teams through four games this season.
