New York Giants offensive lineman Evan Neal issued an apology to the fanbase on Thursday following his comments from earlier in the week.
Neal came under fire after speaking with the media following the Giants’ loss on Monday Night Football to the Seattle Seahawks. The former Alabama lineman was asked about criticism from the fans for his and the team’s underwhelming performance to start the season where he made his controversial remarks.
“I genuinely don’t care,” Neal said about fans’ opinions. “Why should I? I’m in the National Football League. The person that’s commenting on my performance, what does he do? Flip hot dogs and hamburgers?”
Neal was ripped by fans and media in the days following for his quote which was also described by his head coach Brian Daboll as a “poor decision.”
But Neal did take ownership of his words sharing an apology on social media.
“I am wrong for lashing out at the fans who are just as passionate and frustrated as I am,” Neal wrote in a post to X. “I let my frustrations in my play + desire to win get the best of me. I had no right to make light of anyone’s job and I deeply regret the things I said. We are working day in and day out to grow as a team and this was an unnecessary distraction.
“I apologize.”
Neal and the Giants will look to get back on track against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
