Alabama football’s head coach Nick Saban recently discussed the difficulties of preparing to go up against a running quarterback like LSU’s Jayden Daniels.
“It’s very difficult to find a person who can simulate his speed, quickness, change of direction, his ability to read, the zone read plays with the sliders and all that,” Saban. said. “It’s very difficult to get that kind of execution at that tempo in practice. Jalen Milroe is a guy that can definitely do it. He is the same kind of athlete, has the same kind of speed, but he is gotta get ready to do what we were gonna do in the game. So, we don’t practice against each other, maybe 12 plays of team run, maybe 20 plays against each other in one period and that’s basically it.”
Alabama will look for a layer on its roster to imitate Daniels as the Crimson Tide prepare for the Tigers.
“We have to find somebody else who can simulate that kind of speed and explosiveness,” said Saban. “That’s the hard part. Then when the game comes, the speed of the game is completely different. It’s almost like in the old days when you played against the Wishbone team. You could never get a guy to run the Wishbone like Oklahoma’s quarterback did. So, when the game came, they were just so much faster and it was happening so much faster. It took the players a while to respond to it.”
Daniels led the Tigers to a win over Alabama last season.
