Nick Saban’s halftime mannerisms have rubbed off on Kevin Steele

Nick Saban is not the only Alabama coach chewing people out this season.

Kevin Steele, 65, had a halftime message for the Crimson Tide’s defense against LSU that third-year cornerback Terrion Arnold could not repeat to reporters. Arnold said after the game that if he had said what Steele said at halftime, he would not be able to do media anymore.

Steele, who is in his third stint with the Tide, has been masterful at second-half adjustments this season. Coach Saban popped a blood vessel in his eye from getting after players in practice for the LSU game. Coach Steele got onto the guys at halftime.

“I don’t know if you saw my eye, but my eye is all red,” Saban said in the SEC Coaches Teleconference. “I went to the doctor … and he said, ‘Well, it must be from yelling.’ I guess I do like the relief of other people getting on players (laughs) when they need it.”

Saban feels good when he’s not the only coach holding players accountable. Steele is an old-school guy who wants things done the right way. He was excellent in the second half against Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and LSU as Alabama allowed a combined 20 points.

Steele looks to continue having the Tide play dominant versus Kentucky.
