Nick Saban gives latest injury update on Deontae Lawson and Jaylen Key

Following its big win over LSU, Alabama could be entering Saturday’s game against Kentucky a bit undermanned defensively.

During his weekly radio appearance, Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban offered the latest injury update on linebacker Deontae Lawson and Jaylen Key. Both have been limited throughout this week and now just one day out from kickoff, the pair’s status is still up in the air.

“They haven’t been able to practice much this week, so very questionable for this game,” Saban said. “Hopefully, we can get them back in the near future. It’s going to be an opportunity for some other guys to step up.”

Saban mentioned on Wednesday that the two hadn’t practiced to that point and it would be difficult to see them play against the Wildcats unless there was progression at practice on Thursday.

Should Lawson be held out, the play-calling duties on defense would likely be handed off to Georgia transfer linebacker Trezmen Marshall with Jihaad Campbell rotating in off the reserves to fill the opposite linebacker spot.

In the secondary, Alabama will likely make several adjustments to its rotations if Key is unable to go which will include Kristian Story and Trey Amos each taking on bigger roles.

Alabama is set to kickoff against Kentucky at 11 a.m. with ESPN on the call.
