Nick Saban details challenge of stopping Georgia’s talented tight ends

The Georgia Bulldogs have a pair of impressive tight ends in veteran player, Brock Bowers, and freshman, Oscar Delp.

Bowers is considered by many to be the best tight end in college football. He has pulled in 51 receptions for 661 yards and six touchdowns this season despite battling injury issues. Delp has stepped up in his absence with 22 receptions for 254 yards and two touchdowns on the season.

Saban discussed the challenge of slowing down talented tight ends on Sunday.

“I think first of all, tight ends are bigger people,” Saban said. “When they’re very athletic and very good receivers, it’s a little bit like basketball in a way. If you have a really talented big guy, and he’s athletic enough, you got to guard him with a smaller guy, that creates some advantages for the bigger guy. If you cover him with a bigger guy, and the bigger guy is not as athletic, that creates some problems, too. I think it’s a mismatch issue that comes from having guys that are really good blockers. If you have smaller guys guarding ’em, then you got a mismatch in the running game, too.”

The last time Alabama took on Georgia in the SEC Championship game, Bowers had ten receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown. The Tide did contain him in their next matchup when they limited him to 36 yards on four receptions.
