Nick Saban explains last play call against Michigan in Rose Bowl

Nick Saban provided an explanation for Alabama’s decision on the last play of the Rose Bowl against Michigan.

The Crimson Tide had possession of the football in overtime when they were down 27-20 to the Wolverines. On 4th and goal, Jalen Milroe was stop short of the touchdown when he ran the football into the interior of the Michigan defense. Saban discussed Alabama’s thinking behind the play call during his post-game press conference.

“We called three plays,” Saban said. “One they called timeout, one we called timeout and the last one that didn’t work. So, the fact that it didn’t work, made it a really bad call…We called timeout because we had a bad look. We had a good look on the first one, they must’ve known it. Tommy (Rees) felt like the best thing that we could do was have a quarterback run… but we didn’t get a block so it didn’t work. We didn’t execute it very well, so it didn’t work.”

Michigan moved on to the College Football Playoff National Championship with the win.
