Kalen DeBoer lost two assistant coaches he’s close with to NFL jobs, but he has someone who is making his presence felt at the University of Alabama under him.

Kane Wommack, 36, is the new defensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide.

He comes over from the University of South Alabama where he spent three seasons (2021-23) as its head coach. Wommack improved the Jaguars’ defensive numbers each year, including a top-15 finish in college football for total defense in 2023.

He has been a defensive mind since 2014, serving at Eastern Illinois (2014-15), South Alabama (2016-17), and Indiana (2018-20) as a defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Wommack’s relationship with DeBoer goes back to his time at Indiana, but the Missouri native is starting to make his presence felt in Tuscaloosa, Ala. A photo surfaced to social media with “SWARM D Crimson Tide Football” on it. Wommack’s defensive philosophy is the 4-2-5 swarm defensive system. He wants to attack offenses with tenacious defensive linemen, quick linebackers, and versatile defensive backs. Several names have an opportunity to have marquee success under Wommack in the coming fall.

Spring practice is coming in a few weeks, and Crimson Tide fans are looking forward to seeing what this defense becomes.
