Alabama saw several problems offensively last season with some even as simple as getting the ball to the quarterback.
Former Crimson Tide center Seth McLaughlin and quarterback Jalen Milroe never appeared to iron things out regarding snap direction. Milroe could be seen several times a game either bending low for a snap or even having to chase after a misfired one altogether.
Despite proving to be an effective player once the ball was delivered accurately, McLaughlin’s woes hurt Alabama in some of the season’s biggest moments. This included a loose ball that set up the now famous 4th and 31 touchdown pass in the Iron Bowl, as well as the final play of the season for the Crimson Tide when it was stopped on 4th and goal at the Rose Bowl with what appeared to be another low snap.
Following the loss to Michigan in the College Football Playoff, McLaughlin entered the NCAA transfer portal where he would quickly find a new home in Ohio State where he is currently going through spring practice.
So far things appear to be going smoothly for McLaughlin up front as head coach Ryan Day hasn’t seen any issues with his snaps. But when speaking with members of the media, he believed it was the cadence of Milroe that threw off McLaughlin’s play.
“Seth’s snaps have been great,” Day said. “I know that was a little bit of a concern. I think that had a lot to do with maybe the cadence or whatever. But so far, he’s been doing great.”
Even with the inconsistency, McLaughlin started all 14 games for Alabama last season and is looking to solidify the front of the Buckeyes in 2024.
