Drake Maye was once projected to be the next great quarterback for Alabama football when he was committed to the Crimson Tide.
The consensus four-star recruit was an Alabama commit for approximately eight months before he de-committed from the Tide and committed to North Carolina. His decision led to him having to break the news he was de-committing to Nick Saban. Maye looked back on the ‘tough’ decision during an interview on the “Dan Patrick Show.”
“It was tough,” Maye said. “I dreaded it for a while. Coach Saban was one of my favorites in the recruiting process, so having to tell him I am going to stay home was tough. Coach Saban understood Maybe it would have worked out a little different, but coach Saban, I think he is the G.O.A.T of college football.”

Maye went on to have a successful college career with North Carolina and is projected to be one of the first quarterbacks off the board in the 2024 NFL Draft.
