Former Alabama running back and current Pittsburgh Steeler, Najee Harris spoke with AL.com about the transfer of power taking place in Tuscaloosa with the retirement of his former college head coach Nick Saban and the arrival of his successor, Kalen DeBoer.
Harris had quite a bit to say about the changes for his alma mater after he spent four seasons in Alabama, winning a national championship and being selected in the first round under Saban.
“I’m pretty sure he knows that he has really, really big shoes to fill,” Harris said. “So, you know for me coming from where I’m at, there’s nothing really much I can tell him that he don’t already know or don’t already see.”
The former Alabama back also touched on the challenges DeBoer will face in year one on the field and how he should attack them.
“You know, with him losing a game it’s gonna mean a lot,” Harris said. “One game is gonna mean a lot, you know what I mean? Even him winning close games is gonna mean a lot but, just, he’s got to keep his chin up. I mean, always, always know what you’re there for, what the mission is, what they got you for, what you are.”
Harris has respect for what DeBoer has done so far as a coach.
“He’s a winning coach,” Harris said. “You can’t take that from him.”
