Former Alabama DB is ‘concern’ about the Tide’s defense ahead of the season

Former Alabama defensive back, Roman Harper shared his thoughts on Alabama football’s defense ahead of the 2024 football season earlier this week.

Harper, who is now a college football analyst on the SEC Network, talked about why he has some concerns about Alabama’s defense.

“I have a little bit of concern with the whole defense as a whole just because it’s all such a brand new system,” Harper said. “Until I see at all work together and everybody is on the same page with live bullets too, not just walk throughs, not just going against ourselves, where we are use to seeing the same type of offense. What is that going to look like? What is going to be our base third-down call…I’m really looking forward to seeing it. I went back and did some film when he (Kane Wommack) was at Indiana when he was calling the plays, not just what he produced at South Alabama but when he as at Indiana with Kalen DeBoer. I like some of the things that they will be doing. It’s going to look a lot different than what Alabama did for so many years under Nick Saban. A little bit more off-man coverage.”

Harper and the rest of the college football world will get their first look at Alabama’s defense under Wommack on Aug. 31 when the Tide kicks off the season against Western Kentucky.
