For a few members of the coaching staff, the heat of an Alabama summer is something they’ve never experienced in their lives let alone careers.
But new defensive coordinator Kane Wommack is a bit more accustomed than others. Wommack previously served as the head coach at South Alabama from 2021-23 and to make it more obvious that he’s a bit more used to the climate, he has been sporting hoodies throughout the first two sessions of fall camp.
The photos of Wommack’s choice of fashion made rounds on the internet, and on Thursday he was asked about the reasoning behind his attire.
“I have worn it for so long that I think it’s just kind of what I naturally do,” Wommack said. “I think early on I was trying to keep off.. you see a lot of older coaches, they get little spots on them and all that stuff. Then I kind of got used to it and now you get a good sweat in and all that stuff, lose a couple pounds as well. I’ve done it the last three years in Mobile and did it for years before that so it is what it is.”
Alabama will continue to be in the thick of things weather-wise as it is expected to be above 90 degrees through next week.
Despite Wommack’s explanation, it doesn’t appear as if head coach Kalen DeBoer will be joining in with him.
“Nok, you won’t see me like that,” DeBoer said. “That’s his thing. Just let him do that.”
The Crimson Tide will continue with practice on Saturday in Tuscaloosa as it works towards its Week 1 matchup with Western Kentucky on Aug. 31.
