Ryan Williams was a constant topic during Alabama football’s offensive media availability Saturday.
The former five-star is settling into fall camp with the Crimson Tide as he has the potential to possibly play as a freshman. Alabama’s starting quarterback Jalen Milroe feels the Alabama native is showing early signs of being a competitor during the first three days.
“He’s doing a good job competing,” Milroe said. “This is his first live action, going against our defense. He’s doing a really good job. He’s just competing, getting better and also just trying to be the better version of himself. He is led by coach Shep (JaMarcus Shephard). He doing a really good job with him, and that’s gonna push him to be the best receiver he can be.”
Alabama’s offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan has been impressed with Williams’ maturity.
”He’s a very explosive player,” Sheridan said. “He tracks the ball really well, and he’s mature. He’s a mature competitor for a young player.”
Williams is also building bonds with his fellow wide receivers. One of the perceived leaders of the room, Kendrick Law had nothing but good things to say about Williams Saturday.
“He has been great,” Law said. “He’s fun. He goes out there and he does him, and he’s always gonna be Ryan. He’s gonna be Hollywood. He gonna make plays, and he gonna get up and do what he do.”
There have been several young wide receivers come in and contribute early for Alabama. All eyes are on Williams to be the next to do so. Kalen DeBoer is looking for the former five-star to do the little things right.
“I don’t need him day one, I mean, you want every play to be amazing explosive, but you just want him lining up right, doing the fundamental things, making the easy plays, and then because of his ability, the big ones will come,” DeBoer said. “So, when your on air, run a good route, catch the ball, accelerate out with good ball security. You find those consistent fundamentals, you stack days. Those plays we know he is capable of making will happen.”
