Alabama football has its first scrimmage Saturday of fall camp and people will watch its first true test against marquee wide receivers in college football, but the Crimson Tide’s defensive secondary is looking good.
Nick Saban left Kalen DeBoer and Kane Wommack a beyond talented secondary.

Alabama is fine on the back end of its defense, regardless of the names that left in the NCAA transfer portal. Germie Bernard, a transfer wide receiver from Washington, spoke highly of the group he competes against every day in practice. He named several defensive backs that have impressed him, including two freshmen. It has been iron sharpening iron between receivers and defenders through six practices in fall camp. Bernard said Alabama’s defensive backs have gotten the receivers better.
“Keon [Sabb], Malachi [Moore], obviously, the young dude Bak [Jaylen Mbakwe], I love Bak, Zabien Brown, and Domani Jackson,” Bernard said in naming the defensive backs that have grabbed his attention.
“All those guys bring their best every day at practice and it forces us to be at our best.”
Bernard remembers Jackson from their battles in the Pac-12 Conference.
Jackson, a product of Mater Dei High School, played at the University of Southern California for two seasons. He did not match up much against Jackson in their games; however, Bernard is excited to compete against him in practice for the Tide.
The defensive coaching staff, including Wommack and Maurice Linguist, have raved about Mbakwe and Brown in fall camp.
Both continue to grow and should be contributors in the secondary. Alabama’s defensive backs should not have many problems this season.
