Kalen DeBoer was recently asked what would be considered a successful season for him in year one at Alabama during a one-on-one interview with Lauren Sisler for AL.com.
DeBoer is set to begin his first season as the head football coach at Alabama on Aug. 31 when the Crimson Tide play host to Western Kentucky. This is not the experienced coach’s first time taking over a program which means he is quite familiar with the question.
“I’ve gotten that question each and every time I take over a program, and it’s never gonna be about a win total,” DeBoer said. “In some ways, you don’t wanna fall short then it’s not a success but I think as much as anything, you also don’t wanna sell the team short. I always use the last couple of months, the example of Washington, where it was 4-8, and if I would’ve said ‘Hey double-digit wins, getting 10 wins would’ve been a success,’ that would have been selling that team short because we won 11 and so it isn’t about that. To me it’s about what’s it feel like. What’s the energy? What’s the attitude everyday that these guys bring into this facility, the staff as well? Hopefully, when you’re looking at our team, you see a team that really cares about each other, has really grown close and plays extremely hard. Those that really pay attention to the game I think can identify that real quickly. That’s what I’m hoping you see and because of that, the results will take care of themselves, and the love and compassion these guys play and have for each other will result in the wins that are needed to reach the goals that we have.”
The college football season is right around the corner, and DeBoer and Alabama are expected to be one of the main talking points throughout the year.
