Alabama football’s defensive coordinator, Kane Wommack revealed multiple freshmen should see snaps at cornerback against Western Kentucky.
The Tide is looking for some dependability in 2024 at cornerback after losing Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry to the NFL. Many expect Domani Jackson to start at cornerback for Alabama with the opposite corner position up for grabs. The list of names battling for the spot includes Dashawn Jones, Zabien Brown, Jaylen Mbakwe, Jahlil Hurly and Zavier Mincey.
Mincey, Brown and Mbakwe are all freshmen. The Tide DC believes it is a good chance a couple of them will play in Alabama’s’ season opener and throughout the season.
“Those younger freshmen have been really impressive to me,” Wommack said. “What was impressive to me is when they would make a mistake, they would work to correct it and often would not make it again. I think each one of them have taken a major step forward through the off-season, throughout the summer time and in the fall camp. So, you’re gonna see a lot of them play. I think it’s it’s something that’s really exciting. I’ve said this before. Experience is finite. Sometimes we’re gonna have to go through some of those adversities. You’re gonna take your lumps every now and then as a young freshman, but what I’ve been excited about is those guys have shown that when they do make a mistake that they can get it fixed moving forward If they’ll do that, you know, they’ll continue to elevate their game throughout the season.”
Alabama opens the 2024 football season at home on Aug. 31 against Western Kentucky.
