Jamarcus Shephard tells hard truth about Alabama wide receivers

Alabama wide receiver Kendrick Law runs with the ball against Tennessee

The Alabama wide receiver room will look almost completely revamped when they take the field on offense this season after retooling.

This comes after the Crimson Tide lost their three of its leading pass catchers from last season in Jermaine Burton, who took his talents to the NFL, while Isaiah Bond and Amari Niblack both entered the NCAA transfer portal and found new homes with SEC newcomer, the Texas Longhorns.

The Tide still has a couple of familiar names remaining in their wide receiver room in Kobe Prentice and Kendrick Law, who are both juniors returning to Tuscaloosa after Prentice has seen substantial playing time and Law has played limited roles on offense in seasons past. Prentice currently has the most experience in an Alabama uniform, recording 18 receptions for 314 yards and a score last season. Law is a close second after being seldomly used on offense, recording 15 catches for just 135 yards in 2023.

Alabama is expected to lean on the pair in 2024, along with a cast of newcomers in Washington transfer, Germie Bernard, and some talented young and inexperience wideouts in Emmanuel Henderson, Cole Adams, Caleb Odom, Ryan Williams, Rico Scott, Cole Adams, Bubba Hampton and Amari Jefferson.

Alabama’s co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Jamarcus Shepard described the status of the room he is inheriting in his first year at Alabama with one word, ‘Inexperienced.’

“This group hasn’t had a ton of experience out there but they’re going to get it,” Shephard said. “It’s on the way, it’s coming here soon. The practices really are their experience, so you know, even in saying that, I’ve given them plenty of experience in practice. Now being in a game environment, it really isn’t a lot different. We put them through so much in practices that really i’d hope for the games to be a lot easier than what we already do in practice.”

Shephard and the raw talent and development of the Alabama wide receiver room is definitely something to keep an eye on Saturday.
