Jalen Milroe is on the cusp of starting his first game under Kalen DeBoer.
The pair will enter their first game as a head coach and quarterback duo Saturday when Alabama takes on Western Kentucky.
It has been a long seven months of change in Tuscaloosa with Nick Saban retiring and Kalen DeBoer taking over head coaching duties for the Crimson Tide. Before Milroe takes a snap in his offense, DeBoer has had to prepare to coach the talented quarterback and the weapons around him by watching their games from last season.
“I watched the games on my own, just not just for Jalen’s purposes, but for everyone, just to understand what these guys have been through, the games, how they flowed, what our personnel did look like, not just at quarterback, but all of them,” DeBoer said. “I think probably the thing I tried to do the most of is in between each series when we’re out there in practice is getting him and just, going through, ‘He, What did you think about play one, two, three, four?’ Usually, we run four to six play sequences. Just getting his feedback and getting his feedback on what he felt, what he thought he could do better. Let him clarify. Because if you can articulate it, I think that says a lot about where you’re at and understanding what we’re trying to do. I can sit there and talk to him all the time. Coach Sheridan can sit there and talk to him all the time. But I think him being able to articulate it with our verbiage, with our kinda terms. I think it says a lot. He’s a student of the game. It’s important to him. He gets the importance of it to us. He’s really come a long, long ways.”
The work Alabama has put in will be on diplay Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
