Alabama football players feel they can play freely within Kane Wommack’s defense.
The Crimson Tide’s defense had a shutout performance in their season-opening win over the Hilltoppers. They forced two turnovers in the dominant performance. Keon Sabb was responsible for both turnovers as he finished the game with two interceptions.
The Michigan transfer feels the Tide’s defensive system allows him and his teammates to be playmakers.
“With this defense, we get so much freedom,” Sabb said. “He allows me to be the playmaker I am and for really all the guys is putting us positions to be able to be free and be athletes and do what we do best to make plays.”
Wommack’s remains hungry for his defense to create more turnovers.
“The two takeaways we had early were positives, but I did not think we capitalized on takeaways as a defense,” Wommack said Monday. “I felt we had opportunities to score on defense, multiple times we did not make the most of those opportunities. We also had opportunities in the backfield. Sacks are great, but sacks that cause fumbles are way better and can get the ball back for our offense. Those are things that the guys have been challenged on. I did not think we meet the standard on what we are capable of on defense. I hope to see the response from our players in their intentionality to take the ball away.”
