Kalen DeBoer explains why Elijah Pritchett subbed in game late vs. USF

Alabama OL Elijah Pritchett (#57) running drills during Crimson Tide's 2024 fall camp practice.

Elijah Pritchett made his way onto the field in the fourth quarter for Alabama at right tackle against USF and was on the field for three of the Tide’s fourth-quarter scores.

Pritchett started at left tackle in Alabama’s win over Western Kentucky. Kalen DeBoer said the Georgia native was a little bit banged up following the Tide’s win over the Hilltoppers. This prompted the Tide to start Tyler Booker at left tackle, Geno VanDeMark at left guard, Parker Brailford at center, Jaeden Roberts at right guard and Wilkin Formby at right tackle against USF.

Penalties and lack of production on offense allowed Pritchett to get on the field at right tackle in the fourth quarter. This happened late in the game because Alabama was trying to get Pritchett some extra time to rest.

“Just a minor ding, and we were trying to trying to get through,” DeBoer said. “He didn’t practice much early in the week but practice Wednesday and Thursday. So, was ready to go, probably worked a little bit more on the left side. We felt good…we were just gonna roll with what we had with Book (Tyler Booker) and Geno (VanDeMark). He was ready to go. He could’ve started the game, and we were just trying to trying to hold on as long as possible,  just try try to keep him a 100 percent healthy. He got through just fine tonight. I think we’re we’re gonna be in better shape offensive line wise going into next week. So, it was a little little touch and go there at some points during the week with a few different guys.”

Alabama will look to fix some blocking and penalty issues along its offensive line in the future.
