Alabama football’s head coach Kalen DeBoer, and the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan assessed the play of Jalen Milroe earlier this week.
Milroe has been under DeBoer’s tutelage all summer and fall camp long and it seems to be paying dividends early on in the season as the redshirt junior accounted for nine total touchdowns. He also has a 65.7 percent completion rate and has thrown no interceptions thus far.
DeBoer expressed he is pleased with the growth he’s seen from Milroe as he communicates with the Tide’s offensive staff in preparation and in actual game setting situations.
“I think he does a good job of talking and giving us feedback of what he likes, and he maybe is a little bit ‘hey let’s try to hold off on that’ as we go through the week and I love that,” DeBoer said. “I love that because if there’s any question in any players minds, but especially the quarterback let’s hold off on that. That’s few and far between, but he’s done in a good job of giving us feedback on what he saw and knowing that we can work together to help get him in the spots that he really wants to be in. We’re making progress, great progress.”
DeBoer also cited multiple plays where Milroe has impressed him as a passer in his decision making through two games.
“Those are things that I’ve seen that he’s really improved,” DeBoer said. “He had a scramble to (CJ) Dippre where he hit him along the sideline. I thought there was another one that he did a really good job, some other guys could’ve worked with him a little bit better on a scramble drill. He went to the right and hit Germie (Bernard) on a scramble. So, I think eyes downfield and playing that game that he can play because people are worried about his legs where he can run and take off or he can draw the attention to them and throw it. I think that’s been great. He’s had some good throws on the run and has kept his eyes down the field when the pocket collapses. He’s getting more confident on his reads when we give him the option to hand the ball off or throw it.”
Sheridan also chimed in on the progression and maturation process he’s seen from Milroe.
“He did some nice things the other night in terms of avoiding some rush and creating some plays,” Sheridan said.
This continued growth for Milroe under Sheridan and DeBoer is paramount as Alabama faces stiffer competition starting this week when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin to face the Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium.
