Does Alabama lack star power on defense this season?

Alabama football’s defense has underperformed this season. There are several problems, but one of them might be unable to be fixed.

Unlike most years, Alabama seems to be lacking a true alpha on defense this season. In years past, Alabama’s defense has been led by players like C.J. Mosley, Reuben Foster, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Will Anderson Jr., and several others. It seems like the Crimson Tide lack star power this season.

While most would suggest that Alabama has leaders on the defensive side of the ball, that may not be the case. Malachi Moore and Deontae Lawson were named captains prior to the start of the season. However, both players have struggled to ‘take the bull by the horns’. Moore lost his cool a week ago and let his emotions get the best of him. Lawson’s stats indicate that he is the leader, but a leader would not allow the Crimson Tide to have two “let down” games in a row. That is exactly what has happened.

Yes, there are plenty of four and five-stars on Alabama’s defense. However, that does not mean anything if they are unable to live up to the hype. Thus far, no one has emerged as Alabama’s true leader on defense. In the last 10 quarters, opponents have scored 92 points against the Crimson Tide.

Some would point to defensive coordinator Kane Wommack being the biggest problem. I think it could be a combination of not having the star power and Wommack’s inability to make adjustments thr0ughout the game. Both have plagued the Crimson Tide defense this season. In order for Alabama to have success on defense, they will need to play more as a team and prioritize being as fundamentally sound as possible. Otherwise, Alabama could lose multiple games in the regular season.
