How Kane Wommack plans to defend dynamic Tennessee offense

Alabama DC Kane Wommack giving out signals in spring practice for the Crimson Tide.

There is no questioning the fact that Tennessee has one of the most dynamic offenses in college football this season.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack knows that Saturday will be a challenge for the Crimson Tide defense. On Monday, he spoke with the media and provided some insight for how he plans to defend the Volunteers dynamic offense.

“For us, based off the personnel groupings they have and based off the formations they’re gonna come out in, we’re going to have to be able to defend the lateral space and the vertical space on the outside but also make sure that we’re leveraging the box. This is a run football team. They want to establish the run. They set that up to take shots downfield,” Wommack said, “For us, you don’t wanna get too far away from home base, what you are, and what you do. From a personnel package standpoint, we’re going to always look at what we think is the optimal scheme and personnel to get our players in the right position.”

Tennessee is an explosive offense that averages over 42 points per game and 484.5 yards per game. Those are really impressive numbers to say the least. Granted, the Volunteers have not performed well offensively in each of the last two weeks. However, this is a game that could determine a lot for both programs. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel has had good gameplans in the past when facing Alabama defenses. I would expect that to be the same this weekend.

Wommack and the Crimson Tide will need to prepare for any and everything. Heupel is one of the best offensive minds in college football. He will look to slowly wear down Alabama’s defense with tempo. It will be essential for Wommack and the defensive coaching staff to be able to utilize depth this game. I feel like that is something that Wommack has been able to do this season is establish depth. It will be put to the test early and often against Tennessee’s offense on Saturday afternoon.
