Kalen DeBoer is beginning the balance the art of being a head coach that his players love while still being the one to hold guys accountable.
Alabama football earned a 34-0 victory over Missouri last week on Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
How Kalen DeBoer plans to have Vols experience help Alabama in LSU home environment
The Crimson Tide had a strong homecoming performance, but there was moment between DeBoer and a backup offensive lineman that captured attention. DeBoer was having a chewing/teachable moment with Roq Montgomery, a member of Alabama’s 2023 recruiting class, on the sideline after a play. Montgomery appeared to not look at his coach in the face as he was talking; however, DeBoer got his attention quickly. It was a situation where Tide fans got excited seeing DeBoer have passion.
He explained on Monday to reporters about what led to the moment.
“It is about things that are happening that you want to be better at,” DeBoer said about his moment with Montgomery.

“Just moments we were going through where I felt there were some things we could be better with how we were handling and being composed. That is the expectation for everyone. It does not matter whether you are on the field for the first snap or the end of the game, up or down, we have to emphasize doing things the right way and play to the standard.”
DeBoer said Montgomery is a ‘good kid’ and ‘gives everything he has to the program.’
He used Montgomery to get his message across to everyone that Alabama has to play to its standard.
Nick Saban, Alabama’s former head coach, stated on ESPN’s College GameDay before the Missouri matchup that the Tide should not be worried about winning. Saban said Alabama should be worried about playing to its standard.
It kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive last week, but now it needs to continue versus LSU.
