Over the course of the season, Alabama’s coordinators have become acclimated to SEC play. In the past two weeks, there has been a substantial growth from them. Alabama is performing its best this season right now, and some of the credit deserves to be given to the two play-callers.
Alabama offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan has steadily evolved as a play-caller over the course of the season. To begin the season, the offense centered solely around quarterback Jalen Milroe and wide receiver Ryan Williams. Over time, the offense has featured more players like tight end CJ Dippre, wide receiver Kendrick Law, and running backs Jam Miller and Justice Haynes among several others.
The thing that has stood out the most is Sheridan’s ability to adapt and improvise in the last few weeks. If one team is neutralizing Ryan Williams, he will find ways to get others involved. The offense has been more balanced in recent weeks as well. That will be a crucial element moving forward. Can Alabama continue to be a balanced, productive offense down the home stretch?
Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has had more question marks surrounding his name this season. The concerns arose from the Alabama fanbase following the Georgia game. The Crimson Tide allowed seven points in the first half. In the second half, Georgia scored 27 points and nearly emerged victorious. That was a red flag that seemingly lingered the next three weeks.
After losses to Vanderbilt and Tennessee, it seems to have ignited a spark in Wommack and the defense. In the past two games, Wommack’s ‘SWARM’ defense has allowed just 13 points, recorded three sacks, and forced six turnovers. If the defense continues to improve and compliment the offense, there is a strong case that can be made for Alabama being the best team in college football despite having two losses on its resume.
Alabama seems to be peaking at the right time of the season, and the coordinators are slowly adjusting to the SEC. It will be difficult for any team to beat Alabama if the coordinators to continue to develop and call great games week-in and week-out.
