Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables joined the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday morning to discuss the Alabama-Oklahoma game this weekend. He had some positive things to say in regard to two Alabama linebackers and the way that they have performed this season.
“On defense, all three levels they’re playing at an elite level. Their linebackers, Jihaad Campbell and Deontae Lawson, they’re playing as well as any linebacker in the country right now.”
Venables has coached his share of good defenses over the years. He was the defensive coordinator at Clemson from 2012-2021. He helped produce first-round picks like Dexter Lawrence, AJ Terrell, and Christian Wilkins. Each have gone on to have successful careers so far in the NFL.
When it comes to Campbell and Lawson, each of them have improved over the course of the season. In the past three weeks, their play has picked up. Campbell has recorded 29 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in the last three games. He is currently projected to be taken in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft by multiple draft experts. On the other hand, Lawson has recorded 13 tackles and one interception in the last three games.
Altogether, the linebacker duo is arguably one of the best in the country. Their ability to defend the run, rush the passer, and drop back in coverage makes them an elite tandem. Venables and the Sooners sill surely have their hands full trying to contain the two of them in Norman on Saturday night.
