How Alabama’s secondary was able to overcome injuries, improve over course of season

Alabama’s secondary took multiple hits over the course of the season, but the group persevered and improved over the course of the season.

Coming into the season, the expectation was that the secondary would struggle at times against prolific passing attacks. A large reason for that assumption preceded the fact that Alabama lost eight defensive backs to either the transfer portal or the NFL during the offseason.

With that under consideration, Alabama’s secondary was able to hold teams in check this season. Only two teams — Auburn and Georgia were able to throw for over 252 yards this season. The back end was viewed as a work in progress by fans and spectators. While that was the case early on, the group continued to steadily improve over the course of the season.

After starting safety Keon Sabb suffered a season-ending injury following the Tennessee game, the general expectation was that the secondary would take a step back. Instead, it ended up being the opposite. Sophomore safety Bray Hubbard filled in for Sabb following his injury and did a tremendous job of replacing him. Veteran safeties Malachi Moore and DeVonta Smith continued to lead by example, and it was crucial down the stretch.

Cornerbacks Domani Jackson and Zabien Brown held their own for the most part this season in one-on-one situations. Jackson was viewed as the top corner on the roster, and he performed like it this season. He finished the regular season with seven pass deflections and two interceptions. Brown grew up in a lot of ways as the season progressed. The California native finished the season with two pass deflections, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries.

Both were valuable additions to the secondary. Other freshmen like Red Morgan, Jaylen Mbakwe, and Zavier Mincey also provided valuable depth in key moments in the season. Overall, I feel like the secondary was one of the strengths for the Crimson Tide this season. Moving forward, I feel like it will continue to be a bright spot for the Crimson Tide.
