Each offseason, the Alabama football program undergoes changes. It did under Nick Saban, and the same will occur under head coach Kalen DeBoer. The coaching staff will undergo changes. The roster will undergo changes. Nevertheless, the program must move on and adapt to the new era of college football. Today, we will take a look at several areas and ways that Alabama can improve its roster during the offseason.
The most important thing that factors into Alabama’s roster outlook is which players will enter the draft and which players will enter the transfer portal. That is impossible to accurately predict, but it is possible to estimate how many players Alabama could lose at each position.
There are 10 players on the current roster that will exhaust their college eligibility following the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season. Four of which are starters on defense. Defensive linemen Jah-Marien Latham and Tim Smith, safety Malachi Moore, and outside linebacker Que Robinson will need to be replaced either by a backup, or the coaching staff could turn to the transfer portal.
A handful of players will have decisions to make in terms of whether they want to enter the NFL Draft or return to school for a final year. Another group of players will have to make the decision to return or weigh their options in the transfer portal. In all likelihood, Alabama will lose anywhere from 10-20 players to the transfer portal. Meaning there will be spots for Alabama to address.
Some of the position groups that I expect some major roster turnover to occur is along the defensive line, wide receiver, inside linebacker, and special teams. These are some of the most critical position groups on any college football roster but especially for the Crimson Tide. Therefore, I anticipate the Alabama coaching staff doing its due diligence when it comes to recruiting those positions and working hard to identify which players fit the program and its needs heading into next season.
Thankfully for Alabama, there will be no shortage of options to choose from at whatever positions they decide to recruit in the transfer portal. As previously mentioned, I expect the coaching staff to place an emphasis on recruiting the defensive line, wide receiver, inside linebacker, and special teams. Whatever Alabama decides to do, it will be interesting to see how the roster is supplemented for next season.
