SMU head coach gives thoughts on Mustangs potentially missing playoff in favor of Alabama

SMU head football coach Rhett Lashlee gave his thoughts on his team potentially missing the College Football Playoff if they lose in the ACC Championship game to Clemson.

Lashlee was on ON3’s Andy & Ari and was asked about the situation his team finds itself in ahead of the conference title game.

“If our team all got COVID today and didn’t play, we’re in,” Lashlee said in a stern voice. “We don’t have another data point to drop us below anybody that’s behind us. I think if you open up that door, you’re going to see a lot of people do a lot of crazy things.”

Lashlee revealed he believes teams would consider opting out the conference title games if SMU is punished for losing to Clemson, but his team will not be one of those teams.

“We are not going to do that,” said Lashlee. “We’re going to go play in Charlotte, and we’re going to try to compete for our championship because that’s the right thing to doz That’s what competitors do. We value an opportunity to share the field with someone like Clemson, a fantastic team, and try to do something special. Like I said, I’m going to choose to believe that on Sunday that the right thing will be done as well on the other end.”

SMU takes on Clemson Saturday with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CST.
