Breaking: Alabama football left out of 12-team CFP as SMU gets into the field

Alabama football got left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff.

The CFP Committee made the decision on Selection Sunday to go with Southern Methodist University (SMU) over the Crimson Tide for the playoff. SMU lost 31-34 to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game, but it does not have a win over any team currently in the top 25. The committee favored SMU’s conference championship game appearance over Alabama’s strength of schedule.

Brett McMurphy of Action Network HQ broke the story — citing sources — but the committee unveiled it later.

The Crimson Tide beat three teams currently ranked in the top 25, including the SEC Champion in Georgia.

SMU will play Penn State in the first round in the College Football Playoff.

Alabama is heading for a bowl game now.
