In an interesting series of events, one former Alabama linebacker that transferred to an ACC school last offseason has now transferred to an SEC school this offseason.
That would be former four-star linebacker Shawn Murphy. The native of Manassas, Virginia committed to South Carolina on Monday afternoon after spending the past three seasons at Alabama and Florida State.
Coming out of high school, Murphy signed with the Crimson Tide. In two seasons in Tuscaloosa, he played in 18 games. He recorded five tackles and one pass deflection. Following the 2023 season, Murphy entered the transfer portal and wound up at Florida State.
In one season with the Seminoles, he registered 13 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and one fumble recovery. He was one of several players that transferred from Alabama to Florida State in 2024. The others being wide receiver Malik Benson, offensive lineman Terrence Ferguson Jr., cornerback Earl Littel Jr., and running back Roydell Williams. Now, Murphy will be suiting up elsewhere to continue his college football career.
Interestingly enough, Murphy and the Gamecocks will host Alabama during the 2025 season. This should add more intrigue for both programs heading into the game next season. Murphy has the potential to be an immediate impact player for the Gamecocks. I would expect him to be a key addition to the Gamecocks defense.
