When speaking with the media on Sunday, Penn State head football coach James Franklin made it clear that he believed Nick Saban would be a strong candidate to be the commissioner of college football. With the way that the college football landscape has shifted over the last few years, it makes sense for college football to name a commissioner to try and lessen the chaos and conflict that surrounds the sport.
Saban has no prior experience as a commissioner, nor has he made it clear that he would be interested in the job if it were presented to him. Nonetheless, Franklin made it quite clear that Saban is fully capable of manning the job and being the person to run college football the right way.
“I think one of the most important things we can do is, let’s get a commissioner of college football that is waking up every single morning and going to bed every single night making decisions that’s in the best interest of college football,” Franklin said. “I think Nick Saban would be the obvious choice if we made that decision. Now, Nick will probably call me tonight and say, ‘Don’t do this,’ but I think he’s the obvious choice, right?”
He has a strong case and argument to be made as college football could use an appointed commissioner to oversee daily operations in college football and someone that can make the necessary changes to best suit college football, its programs, and its fans most importantly. Saban makes a lot of sense given his presence and lore in college football over the years. He has what it takes to assume the role as the commissioner of college football. Would he accept the position is the real question that needs to be asked?
