On Saturday, former Alabama quarterback Rob Ezell was hired as Wake Forest’s new offensive coordinator. The former Alabama backup signal-caller is well known for his impression of former Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

Ezell, an Alabama native, played at Alabama from 2007-2010. He served as a walk-on with the Crimson Tide. Following his senior season, Ezell chose to pursue a career in coaching. In 2011, he began his coaching career as a student assistant at Alabama.

After the conclusion of the 2011 season, Ezell joined the Colorado State coaching staff as a graduate assistant. He spent three seasons in Fort Collins. Then, he returned to Alabama for his second stint under the direction of Saban.

He spent six more years in Tuscaloosa serving as a graduate assistant and offensive analyst. Interestingly enough, he joined the South Alabama coaching staff in 2020 when he was hired as the team’s tight ends coach. He served on Kane Wommack’s staff for three seasons. Wommack is currently the defensive coordinator at Alabama.

In 2024, Ezell was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach as a part of Major Applewhite’s coaching staff at South Alabama. He will now take on his biggest coaching gig yet in Winston-Salem for a Wake Forest squad that finished the 2024 season with a 4-8 record and struggled mightily to be consistent on the offensive side of the ball. Ezell will look to bring his coaching expertise to the Demon Deacons with hopes of catapulting his coaching career.
