Detroit Lions’ head coach, Dan Campbell is proud of third-year wide receiver, Jameson Williams, and it isn’t just because of his stats.
Despite recording career-highs in all receiving categories with 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven scores, Campbell is more impressed by the mental growth of Williams as person, player and teammate. Campbell made this apparent Thursday when speaking to reporters, just two days before the Lions’ playoff opener against the Washington Commanders.
“I got a lot of pride with him man,” Campbell said. “He’s one of those guys man, I love that kid, because he’s had to endure a lot. And look, some of it was his own doing and he knows that. That’s what I appreciate. It took him a minute to buy into what we were doing. He can be a little hardheaded and it’s also why you love him. It’s why I love him. But man, he’s learned along the way and he’s growing.”
Campbell continued to speak glowingly about the former Alabama wide out.
“Honestly, you want to say, what is the best thing he’s done?”, Campbell said. “When he finally dropped the armor and he endeared himself to his teammates. He became a part of the team. That took place towards the end of last year. You could start to feel it. And it’s only gotten better and better and better.”
Campbell and Williams now look to carryover this continued growth into the postseason as Detroit prepares to take on Washington in the NFC divisional round on Saturday night.
