Nick Saban had a lot to say about the play of his former Alabama quarterback, Jalen Hurts during his weekly appearance on the set of Pat McAfee show on Monday.
Many fans and football analysts around NFL circles ridiculed Hurts passing performance after the dual-threat quarterback managed to completed 15-of-20 passes for 128 yards. The seven-time national championship head coach went back to his time coaching Hurts in Tuscaloosa and revealed what he used to make Hurts do in practice to improve passing ability during the early stages of his collegiate career.
“When Jalen was with us, we would have team and seven on seven, and I would say ‘You can not run, you can not scramble..you have to throw the ball on time,'” Saban said. “And because these guys are so athletic, they see the rush coming and they think they can scramble and get out of it. And a couple of those sacks that he took last night, he took them because in normal circumstances, no snow, no bad knee, all that, he probably would’ve been able to escape and get away and make a play. And he’s done that so much in his career, it’s hard to tell a guy “Hey don’t do that”. But I was trying to train him to become a better on time passer by not allowing him to do it in practice and I think he improved in that regard. But he’s still a great athlete and those guys are going to make plays and you can’t take that away from them.”
Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles now prepare themselves to face their NFC East divisional rival in the Washington Commanders Sunday in the NFC championship game.
