Kalen DeBoer commends Ty Simpson for his preparation for “opportunity to step in and be the quarterback”

Alabama quarterback, Ty Simpson is becoming a unicorn in the current college football landscape where NIL and the transfer portal have made it rare for a player to stick around and wait for his turn.

Simpson is the Crimson Tide’s most experienced quarterback after spending three seasons in Tuscaloosa. He is set to compete to be Alabama’s starting quarterback with Austin Mack and true freshman, Keelon Russell.

DeBoer was asked Tuesday about Simpson and what it means for him to stick with the Crimson Tide through Nick Saban retiring and sitting behind Jalen Milroe for two years.

“You certainly appreciate what he’s done,” DeBoer said. “Just continue to work on what he can control, and that’s himself, continue to build relationships to get ready for this chance, he has right in front of him to not just step up as a leader because I think he’s been doing that, but to have that opportunity to step in and be the quarterback.”

Simpson played in six games during the 2024 season with not many meaningful snaps, serving as the Tide’s primary backup.
