One of the position battles that is sure to create the most intrigue during the spring is the HUSKY position. In Kane Wommack’s SWARM defense, HUSKY is a role used similarly as the Star position or nickel corner in most defenses. The terminology is just a bit different in Alabama’s defense.

Needless to say, the HUSKY position is critical to the defense’s success and will certainly be during the 2025 season.

Alabama’s starting HUSKY from the 2024 season was DeVonta Smith. He transferred to Notre Dame this offseason.

Several players that will likely compete for the starting spot in 2025 are Zavier Mincey, DaShawn Jones, Cameron Calhoun, and Red Morgan.

It will be a battle that likely stretches into the fall. Jones and Calhoun are the most experienced options. Jones transferred to Alabama from Wake Forest. Calhoun transferred to Alabama from Utah. In 2024, Jones played in 13 games with one start. Calhoun played in 11 games with one start for the Utes in 2024.

Both provide position flexibility and versatility on the back end. That should bode well for each of them next season when it comes to earning significant playing time.

Mincey and Morgan also provide versatility in the secondary. Both are entering their sophomore seasons and saw valuable playing time as true freshmen. The experience will be beneficial for the both of them as they look to carve out a role at either HUSKY or another position on Alabama’s defense.

Overall, there is great depth at the HUSKY position. It will be interesting to see how the competition plays out during spring practices and fall camp.
