Alabama football’s head coach Kalen DeBoer has a formidable chance to capture his first national championship in his second year in Tuscaloosa, according to USA Today.

USA Today’s Blake Toppmeyer recently put together a list of the top six coaches in college football who have the best chances to come away with their first national championship trophy this season. On this list, DeBoer ranks as the fourth coach with the best opportunity to put together a championship-winning team this fall. This spot puts DeBoer ahead of Penn State’s James Franklin and Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman, while only trailing LSU’s Brian Kelly, Oregon’s Dan Lanning and Texas’ Steve Sarkisian as possible head coaches in the business of bringing home their first championship of their careers this season.

Toppmeyer is tying Alabama’s potential success or lack thereof to whoever comes away as the starter under center in Tuscaloosa this offseason. Newly hired Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and his longtime colleague DeBoer will have their work cut out for them this offseason when deciding the winner of the three-way quarterback battle between redshirt junior Ty Simpson, redshirt sophomore transfer Austin Mack and prized five-star freshman recruit in Keelon Russell.

This decision will play a huge factor in DeBoer’s success in 2025.
