Alabama experimenting with 5-Star freshman OL at different positions

Alabama football is using freshman offensive lineman, Michael Carroll at different positions during spring practice.

Carroll is a former five-star offensive lineman and a product of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. His ability to be physical and athletic at more than 300 pounds at 6-foot-6 opens the door for him to be effective at playing multiple positions across the offensive line.

Kalen DeBoer revealed Carroll took some reps at offensive tackle on Monday during the Crimson Tide’s first spring practice, but he is expected to play guard in the long run.

“He took some reps there today,” DeBoer said. “You don’t want to, especially for a young guy. There’s a lot of bullets flying. You don’t want to make it harder than it needs to be for him. You try to keep him in the same position for multiple practices. But also that flexibility for a guy like Michael does exist, and he does have that frame where he could play some tackle, even though, like you said, he probably down the road, end game, probably more of a guard, but. But that’s what I love about some of the guys. They’re athletes. They are versatile. They can play maybe not all five spots because that gets a little confusing. But you can play right side or you can play left side or you can play right tackle, left tackle or right guard, left guard, interior guys, really, you try to learn center as well.”

The 6-foot-6, 315-pounder, was a physical and mean lineman in the trenches as a prospect. When he pulled, he looked like a train coming full steam ahead, and he destroyed anyone he got into his path. He was really athletic for a guy his size. He even looked impressive when he moved over to the defensive side of the football and got after quarterbacks and ball carries as a defensive lineman.

Carroll is one of the Alabama freshmen, who is expected to compete for playing time in year one.
