Former Alabama QB believes ‘gap exists’ in Tide’s quarterback competition

Former Alabama football quarterback, Greg McElroy believes a gap exists in the Crimson Tide’s quarterback battle.

Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell are battling for the title of starting quarterback in Tuscaloosa this spring. McElroy feels there is a gap between Simpson and the other two quarterbacks.

“I believe the gap exists right now between Ty Simpson and everybody else,” McElroy said on Always College Football. “But how big is that gap?”

The National Championship-winning quarterback is intrigued by Simpson’s potential growth as a quarterback and believes the Tennessee product may have an opportunity to be a perfect fit within the Tide’s offense in 2025.

“One thing that I’ve been really interested in with Ty Simpson is how does he develop as a leader?” Said McElroy. “I was told by the staff two years ago that he was the best quarterback on the roster. The problem is at that point, there were some things that needed to be ironed out with his own confidence. What he could get away with, what he can do at this level, what he can’t do at this level. The other thing that I think they’ve found out with this staff is that he’s a little more mobile, a little more athletic than people realized, and he can be a factor in the quarterback run game if needed. But with the upgrades at wide receiver, the advancement of Ryan Williams going into his second year, Germie Bernard as his number two wide receiver, him being another year in the system there in Tuscaloosa, and with an addition or two in the portal, this group might be poised to break out. Ty Simpson, as an accurate drop-back passer to keep you honest with his legs, might be the perfect guy to run the offense.”

Ryan Grubb complimented Simpson’s ability to process information on last week.

“I think Ty has done a good job,” Grubb said. “I thought he had the biggest jump from day one to day two, just as far as being able to take in all the information process quickly and move.
