Alabama football’s quarterback, Keelon Russell is considered to be in the mix to be the Crimson Tide’s next starting quarterback as the Tide’s quarterback competition moves forward.

Russell, Austin Mack and Ty Simpson are all competing to be the next starting quarterback at the University of Alabama.

The battle is well underway with the Tide starting spring practice earlier this month. Russell provided his early thoughts on how the battle is going while talking with Max Wolborsky of Score Atlanta.

“It’s been real great,” Russell said. “The environment…It’s been settled. I can tell you that. It’s been settled. Everybody is looking for that guy. And all three quarterbacks are amazing. You have phenomenal quarterbacks, even more phenomenal people around us. Everybody being around us, the people who’s playing with us it’s gonna be fantastic this season, this summer and this fall and can’t wait to just go out there Monday and just start ball again.”

The Tide’s quarterback battle is being closely watched by Alabama’s offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Grubb compared Russell to two of his former quarterback earlier this month.

“One of the things I noticed, think about Jake Haener way back to Fresno State,” Grubb said. “He’s at the Saints now, got a really whippy quick release. Once he made his decision, he was very decisive with the ball. I see that with Key a lot. Keelon’s vision reminds me of Michael (Penix) a little bit. He has good wide vision with the field and can see it even when he doesn’t know exactly what’s going on. So, he’s still working through all the processes.”

Alabama will resume spring practice this week, and Russell will continue his push to play as a freshman in Tuscaloosa.
