Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer spoke with the media for the second time this spring on Tuesday morning.
DeBoer highlighted several players. Two of which included freshmen wide receivers Lotzeir Brooks and Derek Meadows. DeBoer spoke highly on the pair and what they have put on display through the first four spring practices.
“Derek (Meadows), when you look at him out there, you pick him out anywhere, right? He’s long, has a presence about him,” DeBoer said, “Really got a long wing span. Just get the ball on the vicinity, and he’ll come down with it.”
“Lotzeir (Brooks) is really, really explosive,” DeBoer said, “Lotzeir’s got some of the instincts. Sometimes it’s hard to find guys. It’s not hard to find him. He can finish those plays when a ball is in the air, he can get that little burst to get underneath of it.”
When concluding his answer, he made sure to acknowledge their work thus far.
“We really like what we’ve seen early on from those two guys.”
Brooks was Mr. Football in the state of New Jersey during his senior year of high school. The former four-star reeled in 48 receptions for 1,159 yards and 14 touchdowns. He averaged almost 116 receiving yards per game.
Meadows was a playmaker for Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 6-foot-6 pass-catcher finished his senior season with 24 receptions for 598 yards and seven touchdowns.
Brooks and Meadows have both drawn praise from teammates this offseason.
During the first week of spring practices, safety Bray Hubbard spoke highly of Brooks.
“Lotzeir Brooks, he’s doing really great,” Hubbard said. “That dude’s fast. He’s hard to keep up with. I will say, I ain’t even gonna lie. Hard to keep up with him.”
That is the ultimate praise from one of Alabama’s veteran defensive backs given the fact that Brooks has not played a single college snap yet.
Both Brooks and Meadows figure to be valuable depth pieces at the wide receiver position. There is also the possibility that each of them play a lot of snaps for the Crimson Tide in 2025.
DeBoer and their teammates seem to think that both of them are special players. Respect in the locker room and in the building could go a long way for the pair of freshmen.
