At the end of the 2024 season, Jaylen Mbakwe made the decision to cross-train at wide receiver. Mbakwe has made the full transition to wide receiver this offseason, and Kalen DeBoer spoke on what he has seen from Mbakwe this spring.
“The thing I like about where he’s at right now is his head is in a good place. He’s just working and getting better,” DeBoer said, “He’s getting in there and taking advantage of the reps he has had.”
Mbakwe is working primarily at the slot receiver position. In 2024, Alabama had multiple options at the slot wide receiver position including Kendrick Law, Kobe Prentice, and Cole Adams. Law and Prentice transferred during the offseason. Adams is returning from a season-ending injury. Mbakwe’s presence and addition to the wide receiver room is certainly intriguing.
Mbakwe played the wide receiver position throughout his high school career. He has the athleticism and skillset to make the transition to wide receiver and become a key contributor for the Crimson Tide on the offensive side of the ball in 2025. His role will be one to monitor for Alabama fans throughout the course of the spring and into the fall.
