Finland native pushing for playing time at multiple positions

Mar 21, 2024; Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA; Offensive linemen Olaus Alinen and Parker Brailsford work on the blocking sled during practice at the University Alabama Thursday.

Sometimes, there are players that are overlooked on Alabama’s roster. On Tuesday, offensive tackle Wilkin Formby touched on which player he believes isn’t receiving as much attention as he may deserve.

“I think Olaus (Alinen) has stepped up. He’s playing in a different position,” Formby said, “He’s been playing a lot of tackle that he hasn’t necessarily been comfortable playing, but he’s doing a good job being where the coaches need him.”

Formby and Alinen were each a part of the 2023 recruiting class. Formby has played in 12 games and has three starts. Alinen has played in 17 games with no starts.

From the sounds of it, Alinen has a strong chance of earning a starting role or being an impactful presence up front for Alabama in 2025.

He has worked at both guard and tackle this spring. The Finland native has the size and skillset to play both positions. He is a utility offensive lineman for the Crimson Tide and might play a similar role as his teammate Geno VanDeMark did in 2024.

VanDeMark played a mix of center and guard last season. He made two starts — one at right guard and one at left guard. Alinen can play on both sides of the line and multiple positions as well.

It will be interesting to see what type of role Alinen carves out for himself during the 2025 season.
